supportive services in housing

Many persons moving from homelessness into housing require short-term or ongoing support in order to achieve housing stability. The Other Place wants to help ensure that those moving out of the shelter system will be successful in housing, and will not need to return to shelter in the future.

Furniture & Household Set Up Assistance
For shelter clients moving into housing, TOP case managers can assist in obtaining furniture and household items. These items are obtained through donations, purchase, or a voucher system from area agencies or businesses.

Follow-Up Case Management
Once housed in the community, individuals may meet with follow-up case managers on a regular basis in order to have assistance in maintaining stable housing. Case managers may make home-based visits with a focus on preventing future episodes of homelessness.  Case managers focus on areas such as basic living skills, parenting issues, budgeting, advocacy with other area agencies, physical health care, substance abuse and mental health counseling, transportation assistance and general housekeeping.

Supportive Housing Programs
The Other Place is pleased to be the service-provider for several supportive housing projects in Montgomery County and beyond. In the programs described below, TOP provides on-site supportive services for the tenants. We do not serve as the landlord, but partner with other community organizations who fill that role.

  • Iowa Avenue
One of the first permanent supportive housing projects in Montgomery County, Iowa Avenue opened in 2002 and features 34 single-room-occupancy (SRO) units for single men in a historic building on the VA Medical Center campus. Miami Valley Housing Opportunities (MVHO) serves as the landlord, and TOP provides on-site supportive services and case management for the tenants.
  • River Commons
This 100-unit apartment building in Dayton was converted into permanent supportive housing in September 2007, in conjunction with the community’s 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness. The project has been highly successful, featuring a "Jobs First" training and employment program available to all tenants. Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority is the landlord, and TOP is the on-site provider of supportive services.
  • Opportunity HousingOpportunity Housing
The Other Place partnered with CountyCorp and the Dayton VA Medical Center's Per Diem Program to develop "Opportunity Housing" for homeless veterans in Montgomery County. This innovative program began in January of 2008 and allows TOP to house and serve veterans in a shared housing format, where two formerly-homeless individuals share a three-bedroom home as roommates. Supportive services are provided by a case manager from TOP who makes daily visits to each house.
  • Ohio Commons
In October Ohio Commonsof 2008, 27 single women moved from the emergency shelter system into their own apartments at this historic building on the VA Medical Center campus. The tenant selection process gave priority to female veterans and chronically homeless women.  As at the Iowa Avenue project, this program is a collaboration between TOP and Miami Valley Housing Opportunities (MVHO).
  • Champaign & Logan Counties
The work of The Other Place extends beyond Montgomery County. Since 2007, we have partnered with Residential Administrators to provide supportive services in housing to 16 formerly homeless individuals in Urbana and Bellefontaine.
