spring 2008
Dear Friends:
Now that warm weather has finally arrived, many of us
are doing our spring cleaning, packing away our winter clothes, and – best
of all – getting to spend more quality time outdoors.
It is a time of rebirth, of new beginnings.
For a person experiencing homelessness, spring means a
welcome end to bitterly cold days and nights.
More hours of daylight and sunshine can lift spirits and renew hope.
Because of our community’s renewed commitment to providing housing
opportunities for the homeless, the staff of The Other Place is hopeful that
many of our shelter clients may indeed move into housing this spring. Unfortunately,
we know that the need for supportive housing far exceeds the current supply,
and that many of our clients will be disappointed.
The average person gives less thought to the plight of
the homeless during the spring and summer months.
After all, there’s no danger of people freezing to death on the
streets when it’s 60 or 70 degrees. But
the number of people experiencing homelessness does not decrease at this
time of year, and their needs are just as great.
Thankfully, our community continues to make progress.
The Other Place is pleased to be a key partner in several initiatives
that are moving our clients from homelessness to housing.
From the 100-unit River Commons apartments to “Opportunity
Housing” for homeless veterans, we are slowly but surely making progress
toward our vision of a community where there is no homelessness.
You can help us provide new beginnings to the people we
serve. As always, our greatest
need is for your financial support, which allows us to address immediate
needs in our shelter, outreach, prevention, and supportive housing programs.
You can also help us to keep this issue in the forefront of
people’s minds by requesting a speaker from The Other Place to come talk
to your group. Call us at (937)
293-1945 or send an email to info@theotherplace.org.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Respectfully,
Tina M. Patterson
