about us

spring 2006

Dear Friends;

Spring is such a busy time of year for people.  There is spring cleaning to be done, flowers to be planted, yards to be mowed, and kid’s activities in abundance.  The Other Place is busy too.  We have much to do all year round, but this is the time of year where we are all invigorated by what the spring season brings.

When I think of spring I often think about spring cleaning, I think about opening my windows and letting the lovely scents of spring into my home.  Those scents are so invigorating to the heart.  I think about starting fresh and renewed.  I like to compare the work of The Other Place to those lovely scents; and the feeling of renewal.  I also believe we invigorate the hearts of homeless people everyday.

Just this year we have already prevented over 150 people from entering into homelessness.  Our prevention efforts have allowed families and children to stay in their homes and also benefit from the joys of spring.  So far this year we have moved nearly 100 homeless people into housing, how exciting for them to have the opportunity to enjoy the spring in their own home. How invigorating it is to us at The Other Place to know we can prevent or end homelessness.

The shelter has been very busy this year as well.  We have provided emergency services already to nearly 1000 individuals with over 20,000 visits.  My wish for all the homeless is they too would have the opportunity to experience spring in their own home and not in our shelter.

The Other Place staff and Board are busy too.  We are nearing the completion of our new strategic plan, which will provide the blue print for the future of the organization.  We will better align our efforts to achieve our vision of a community where there is no homelessness.  We are energized about the future and our efforts to end homelessness.  You will be hearing more as the plan is completed.  Without you, we can not reach this vision.  Without you, we can not invigorate the hearts of the homeless this spring or any other time of the year.

Respectfully,
Tina M. Patterson
